v-lex is the trading name of John Yates, a well known consultant and commercial adviser; John helps buyers and sellers to make effective contracts for complex technology and outsourcing services. He also specialises in salvaging runaway projects.
John started his career as an IBM lawyer in the mid 1980's. Before founding v-lex in 2009, John was the head of technology and outsourcing at national law firm Beachcroft. John has also run his own niche technology law firm, been the managing partner of a regional law firm and partner at Theodore Goddard (now the well known firm Addleshaw Goddard).
John’s wide range of work and clients has given him an unusual breadth and depth of commercial, legal and business skills. The Chambers UK 2009 guide to the legal profession describes him as : "a forceful yet diplomatic figure, who is great in negotiations and can deal with business people well".
John is the author of trade association Intellect’s Contract and Commercial Guidelines and escrow contract. He’s also a past chairman of the Society for Computers and Law. In 2006, John was made a Fellow of the Society in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the development of IT law in the UK.
John studied law at Leeds University (LLB) and St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University (BCL). In his spare time, he likes climbing and mountaineering, and fusion cooking.
